IMG_0112

It was an early start for Otley AC Juniors on Sunday morning along with 250 others they took part in the Leeds Abbey Dash Junior 2km race.  Full of enthusiasm they couldn’t wait to get started, prime front positions on the start line and a fun warm up and they were all set!!
First home for Otley was William O’Neill who came 13th in a time of 6:47, followed by Jenson Brogden 25th in 7:01.  Both boys finished in higher positions and ran faster than last year proving hard work really does pay off – well done!!  Next in a time of 7:23 was Holly Davey who came 39th overall and 11th girl which is fantastic.  Morgan Bardgett finished 57th in a time of 7:59 and Ted Bardgett finished 127th in 9:19.
The Juniors enjoyed the support of the crowd, Hugh was watching on the course and said they all ran really strong, very well done to you all!!

Friday 31st October –  Chevin Chiller – Report from Laura Martin: Callum Martin and I  braved the dark and enjoyed a well organised and very ‘friendly’ (marshalls dressed as ghosts and ghouls) Halloween race. Two laps of Danefield amounting to 6.7km. Callum ran an impressive race holding a strong pace all the way, leaving me behind on the hills. He was first junior and 20th over the line (112 competitors) in a time of 37.54 minutes. Full results
One to look out for next year, if you dare. (must be aged 11+)

Sunday 26th October – Roundahy Junior Parkrun – The Brogden Brothers headed off to Roundhay Park to try their first Parkrun. The Junior Parkrun is a timed 2k run and the course is two laps of the paths in the park. On arrival the organiser asked Jenson if he had come to win? and was surprised when Jenson said YES! Jenson did infact win in a time of 8.11. He ran a lovely race and probably could have gone faster but his mind was on a win not his time.

After running 2 miles at Harewood last week Aston knew this would be easier so he too was feeling confident! He ran well and had a few little battles with a fellow runner. He told us afterwards he was trying to add in a few sprints to make the other runner tired! Aston finished in an impressive 10th place in a time of 9.29. We actually thought he was going to do another lap as he sprinted to the finish so fast! We would highly recommend this run to others but you need to register online first and take a printed barcode with you.

Sunday 19th October, reports Hannah Mallinson, was the 1st West Yorkshire Cross Country meeting of the season at Thornes Park in Wakefield, in the morning it was the juniors turn to show off their talents followed by the adults in the afternoon. Our three juniors Will O’Neil, Erin Fuller and Suzy Lupton arrived full of nerves and excitement, our other cross country juniors were competing at Harewood in an unfortunate clash of events.

The route was well marked out and Will did a quick recce reporting back that there was a killer hill in the middle and it’s longer than you think! The girls were first to go on their 1 lap of the course in the under 11’s girls race, the distance was 1,450 meters so just short of a mile. The starters pistol was fired (very professional) and off they went with the front girls getting a quick start and already pulling a lead. Hugh was waiting on the hill to shout words of encouragement and advice, it is alleged that he had to tell the girls to stop chatting but this is vehemently denied by the girls. As they came round the last corner Erin was the first to appear shortly followed by Suzy, both girls gave it their all and made up a couple of places on the run down to the finish. Erin completed the course in 7:17 and finished in 61st place and Suzy completed it in 7:56 in 73rd place.

Will was next to go with the under 13 boys and had to complete 2 laps of the course which was 2,900 meters, approx. 1.8 miles. As he passed us on the start line at the end of the first lap he didn’t appear to be very happy and we all thought he was tired or possibly hurt so we ran across the field to give him plenty of encouragement on the final stretch to the finish. As he came round to us it was obvious he was in a lot of pain and when we caught up with him at the end it turned out he had twisted his ankle not long into the first lap but like a true Otley AC runner he battled through to finish the race. He completed it in 12:43 and finished in 54th place, a very brave effort.

All the kids did brilliantly and were racing against the best juniors in the area, who quite frankly blew us away with their talents. I think the kids learnt from this that they need to put in more training to compete against this class of runners and maybe not to chat?! The next meeting is on the 2nd November at West Park Playing Fields, Leeds.

Sunday 19th October – Stadium Runners Woodland Challenge – Lucia Stoney took part in the 1 mile fun run. Not sure of her time yet, as the results were not up on their website, but she was 2nd girl. Well done Lulu!

Sunday 19th OctoberHarewood Trail Race – Report from Andrew Webster: A two mile race, with a massive hill near the end, a challenge for our juniors especially in the wind. An excellent showing from all, but special mentions for Jenson Brogden who came 3rd in his category and 5th overall in 14.13 mins, and Holly Davey who was first girl back in her age group, 19th overall, in 15.24. Looks promising for the cross country and fell racing season approaching. Other Otley results: Adam Powell came 15th in 15.08; Will Sneath, 29th in 16.20; Jake McBrinn, 30th in 16.21; Aston Brogden, 32nd in 16.42; and Imogen Webster 54th in 18.42.

Saturday 12th JulyBaildon Carnival Canter and Fun Run Report from Holly’s mum, Becky: Off road 1 mile race.  Holly Davey was 2nd U12 girl!  It was a very hot and humid afternoon, so great performance in the conditions!!  Louis Reece was 1st U10 boy in 7m 19s. Nelson Charlton also took part and had a very enjoyable run with a super sprint finish!!

Thursday 3rd July – BOFRA Murder Mile, Silsden – Aston and Jenson Brogden took part in this short but very tough race!

Sunday 8th June – BOFRA Kettlewell Fell Race – Well done Jenson, Aston, Holly, Jake and Martin McBrinn for running some tough courses; the U9s had to run the U12s and the U12s ended up doing the U14s! Everyone had a refreshing swim in the river afterwards to cool off!

Saturday 31st MayWest Nab Fell Race, Meltham, hosted by Holmfirth Harriers. Report from Gail: The Brogden Boys took part in West Nab Fell Race in Meltham. Aston ran in the U8’s race and didn’t know where he was running as the course was unmarked and instead they had a Hare (U16 runner) to follow. It was a tough course but Aston really enjoyed it and ran well. Jenson ran in the U10’s race which was a challenging course. The narrow paths gave little opportunity to overtake but Jenson did passed a couple of runners .There was also a killer hill which I struggled to walk up before the race let alone run up! Jenson had a strong finish and managed to pass a few more runners on the home straight. A very enjoyable race despite the nettle stings! Very proud of both boys!

Monday 26th May Ilkley Trail Race – A very muddy race where Jenson Brogden, Aston Brogden, Lucia Stoney and Jake McBrinn took part! Lucia was 1st girl in the U8s – well done Lucia!!

Saturday 17th MayOver the Odda– We had an excellent turn out for the Junior 1 mile race on a red hot Saturday morning, the junior race is a fun run for 7-11 year olds. The kids were all raring to go and were set off as one race rather than in the age groups they are used to. They went haring down the 3 fields before turning back for the second half which is back up the hill, around the middle field and up a steep incline to the finish. Everyone ran brilliantly, despite some sheep trying to get in on the act and trip them up. The winning boys were all Otley Juniors, 1st – William O’Neil, 2ndSpencer Dojahn Wood and 3rdJenson Brogden. Unfortunately, the sheep trying to join in made the girls results a little confusing but the top five girls as I understand it were (and not in any particular order)  Holly Davey (Otley), Milly Davis (Otley), Grace Dawson, Florence Stoney and Lucia Stoney (Otley). Well done to everyone who entered!

Thursday 15th May – Fantastic well done to Imogen Webster and Jenson Brogden for running in the Danefield Handicap race, results table here

Tuesday 13th MayJack Bloor Fell Races are run by the Jack Bloor Trust, which raises funds to support those who want to improve their physical and/or technical skills in a recognised outdoor sport. Results here. – Race report courtesy of Sarah Fuller,

Otley AC juniors were out in force at the Jack Bloor races this year for some muddy but fun racing on the moor in the evening sunshine. Lots of boys running but the only Otley girls were team Fuller who held their own with the lads. Some very impressive runs across all age groups but Will O’Neil getting 2nd in the U12 and Jenson 3rd in the U10’s the stand out performances of the night. Erin also ran well to get 4th girls in the U10’s race and was rapidly closing on the 3rd place, a little longer and she might have done it! Aston Brogden looks to be following in his brothers footsteps with 4th overall (and 3rd Boy) in the U8’s race. Well done to everyone.

U8 – 4 Aston Brogden 4:45, 14 Skye Fuller 5:38 (6th Girl), 15 Adam Padget 5:39

Sunday 11th May – Roundhay Junior Park Run – Well done again to Adam Paget for another park run! Adam came 15th JM10 in a time of 11:26.

Monday 5th May – Coiners Fell Race – Report by Gail and Russel Brogden: Today the Brogden Boys took part in the Coiners Fell Race near Hebden Bridge. The race is a Junior English Championship race and is a tough race! If you have never done a fell race before then I suggest you don’t choose this as your first!! Both the boy’s races had a tough uphill start and walking the course beforehand we were worried that Aston might not get to the top!
Aston ran in the U8’s and proved us wrong by finishing 17th out of 49 and 12th boy home in a time of 6.17! He ran so fast down the home straight he even missed claiming his chocolate bar at the finish!( He got one later though)
Then after a lot of pushing in the starting pen Jenson’s U10 race began. The course saw them start on the killer hill before running through some woods and then into a couple of fields before a very fast downhill finish. Jenson was kicked by another runner on the uphill section but kept on running and said there was a very muddy section where people were falling over! He stayed on his feet and came 20th out of 89 and 17th boy in a time of 10.46.
We are really proud of both boys as this was such a difficult race.

Sunday 4th MayRoundhay Junior Park Run – Well done to Adam Paget in his second park run! Adam came 13th JM10 in a time of 11:06.

Saturday 12th April – Meanwood Valley Trail, 1mile, organised by Valley Striders. Jenson and Holly donned their kit for the Black and Whites! Jenson came 11th overall, 6th in his category, in a fantastic time of 7.02 mins. Holly came an excellent 3rd in her group, 30th overall,  in 7.54 mins. Well done!

Sunday April 6th – Run Sunday – Jenson had a good run today and improved his MJ9 course record by 1 second with a time of 22.04!

Saturday April 5th – Jenson and Holly Davey Competed in the Wakefield Spring Open Meeting. Jenson ran in the 600m and with no 150m he tried the 80m for the first time and was really pleased with how it went. Holly ran in the 100m and the 800m and ran really well especially considering most of the other girls were twice her size!

Sunday March 30th  – Jenson competed in The Winter Warm Up at Spenborough AC. The event was really well organised and the facilities were good too. This was Jenson’s first
outdoor track event of 2014 and after running on a 200m track over the Winter the 400m track was a challenge! Being the only Otley AC Junior there, he was pleased to meet up with the talented Henry Cullen of Grimsby who he has come to know through other competitions. Jenson ran in the 150m and the 600m. He was just off his PB in the 600m but got new outdoor PBs in both events.

Sunday 2nd March – Peco XC League race 5, Northcliffe Park, organised by Saltaire Striders

Sunday 2nd March – Ilkley Fell race – Report from Suzy’s mum, Hannah

Sunday 2nd March and there was a small gathering of Otley AC Juniors at the Ilkley Fell race which was run on the hill below White Wells in Ilkley. Suzy and I arrived early to register and joined the Brogdens for a walking reccie of the route. It was as you would expect for a fell route at this time of year, muddy, boggy and wet. I have to admit that I was thinking it’d be tough to run up those inclines in that mud and wondered how the kids would get on, especially Suzy who had yet to run a full race on her own without tears and tantrums.

We were soon joined by Skye, Erin, Kieran, Alice, Imogen and Holly and it was time to line up for the start of the races. After the first couple of races were set off the start was becoming very slippy under foot and the first corner was catching a few of the kids out. Jenson got a brilliant start in his race and was up the first slope in 2nd place shortly followed by Erin and Suzy who were determined to get up the slope without falling. This was Alice’s first race as an under 10 and although she was struggling to keep up at the start she was as smiley as ever and off she went, we all loved her unique running style in an attempt to stay upright.
Skye and Aston both did the shorter course and I managed to see them coming in before I left to watch the older kids come back on the downhill section. Both had a great race and had huge smiles on their faces as they came up the last slope to finish the race.

The rest of the Juniors managed to make it to the downhill section intact, which was a relief. By this point all the different age groups were mixed up and it was hard to keep track of what position they were all in. Jenson was flying on this section and picked off several of the older kids as he made his way towards the finish line, I was unsure how many if any of his age group were in front as he passed me but he was definitely in the top few.

Imogen and Kieran were looking strong on their way past and Holly was looking a little unsure, she said to me at the end that she didn’t enjoy the downhill, but she was still doing a great job. One kid, not an Otley AC’er, came through with a shoe in one hand but continuing to run like mad, we breed tough kids in this part of the world!
Erin then came through a couple of places in front of Suzy who immediately picked up speed when she saw me and promptly slipped and fell. I’m very proud to say that she immediately picked herself up and continued without stopping before doing the same another two times on the way down, almost face planting on each fall which was quite impressive really! She also managed to beat me down to the finish line, how did that happen??

Anyway, all the Juniors made it home safe and sound even if they were tired, slightly bruised and very muddy so a great effort from all. At the time of writing I have no idea of the results and apologise if I have missed anyone off my report.

Same again on the 13th May for the Jack Bloor? I think so!

Sunday 24th November – Peco Cross Country League, Temple Newsam

Team Junior Otley ACGreat running from our hardy juniors who turned up to run in the cold and wet at Temple Newsam.

Some impressive performances at the sharp end of the one-mile race but our juniors put on a good solid set on performances and were lead home by Jenson Brogden; well done to all.

Years 4, 5 and 6 all ran together which spread the big field of 65 out considerably!

20th Jenson Brogden (year 5) 8:55 (5th year 5 boy)
27th Joe Jamieson (year 7) 9:23
35th Jake McBrinn (year 5) 9:44

49th Erin Fuller (year 4) 11:26 (4th year 4th girl)
59th Suzanne Lupton (year 4) 12:11

62 finished. The winning time was an impressive 7:39 (Bingley).

Sunday 17th November – Junior Abbey Dash –

A good turnout for us and even better results! Report from Anne Bhogal: Ben Bhogal came 15th with a time of 7:21 – a close battle with Will O Neill who came 16th in 7:23, with Jenson not too far behind – 35th with a time of 7:53.  Matthew O Neill came 99th 9.05. I thought it was 2k but might have been less than that as it was a different route to last year. There were over 200 runners, and the winner (Oliver Firth) did it in 6:10, so our boys did fab!

26th October 2013 – South Yorkshire indoor open athletics series fixture 1

Seventeen athletes from Otley AC’s junior track and field team travelled to Sheffield for the first fixture in the Indoor Athletics series. After some hard training in the weeks leading up to the event hopes were high for some good performances to build on the records set in last year’s event

On the day nearly 400 junior athletes from South, East and West  Yorkshire and as far away as Gateshead and Rugby attended the meeting at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.  Otley athletes set 16 new club records and put in some highly competitive performances.

At 800m, Izzy Dixon set a new U13 girls club record of 3:09.06 while Ben Boghal set a new U13 boys record of 2:56.68. Ollie Jonson equaled Ben Bhogal’s U13 boys long jump record with a jump of 3.48m while Grace Burns set a new U15 girls record of 3.93m, Hannah Collins set a new U13 girls record of 3.32m and Sydney Dojahn-Wood set an U9 boys record of 2.45m. Ollie Jonson also set a 200m record for U13 boys of 31.84s while Imogen Elliot did the same for U13 girls with a time of 30.54s. At 600m Jenson Brogden set a new U11 boys record of 2:04.27and Sydney Dojahn-Wood set an U9 record of 2:19.99 as well as a 150m record of 27.99s. In the shot put, Ava Wild set a girls record of 4.99m while Spencer Dojahn-Wood set a new record of 4.29m for the boys. At 60m there were new records for U13 boy Tom Hart at 9.57s and U15 girl Grace Burns at 9.19s but the stand-out performance of the day was from Imogen Elliot who was narrowly beaten into second place with a stunning time of 8.95s, the third fastest time run at this distance by a Yorkshire athlete this year. All the above competitors were pushed hard by the other Otley athletes (Joe Jamieson, Daniel Hart, Will and Matthew O’Neil, Farrel Copcutt and Holly Davey)  who will no doubt be aiming to break their records at the next meeting in November.  Finally, we should thank the officials and organisers of superbly run event.
