Lancashireman, Sunday 28th September
Race report Alison Bowers
“A 27 mile event covering the off-road moorland, towpaths, fields and hills along The Burnley Way. Course 26.7miles with 4420ft climb (43km, 1347m).”
I signed up to this focussing on the words – tow paths and fields to get some miles under my belt, how wrong can you get, however, it was a great race and day out.
Very low key start with approx. 50 runners at Finsley Wharf on the Leeds Liverpool canal near the centre of Burnley. The route followed the towpath for a few miles then out onto the hills and dales of The Forest of Trawdon for fantastic scenery, views and amazing countryside passing Widdop and Hurstwood Reservoirs and up to Thieveley Pike and back down into Towneley Park.
Well stocked and friendly checkpoints provided by Trawdon AC.
Following a rather wet week, the conditions underfoot were rather boggy and peaty in places on the tops and some steep muddy descents. The weather was perfect – cool and dry with hazy sunshine with fabulous views over to the 3 peaks.
Having no knowledge of this area apart from M65 through the valley bottom – I just need to add how impressive the scenery and countryside of this area is – highly recommend!
A grand day out with a time of 06:58:11, it’s all about the experience!

An interesting report from Lancashire by Alison B. who had as well a solid hard off road marathon with quite a few steep climbs like the Thieveley Pike that I have done last week and the wild Widdop Reservoir that I have done last year . Alison crossed the finish line with a strong time of 6.58 . Well done to her for the super achievement .
