Saturday 21st September – Great Whernside Fell Race
Report from Andrew Robertshaw, 4 miles & 1500ft ascent
Not counting tail running our Harrogate League handicap this was my first race of the year. Starting from Kettlewell it’s a classic fell race route straight up and down to the summit trig point. Sunny and warm at the start, cooler and misty on the top. A strong head wind made for slow going on the climb, but in theory helped on the descent, but it never feels like that does it!
With about 5 minutes to go to the top, the race leader, Sam Bentham, Ilkley Harriers, flew past in the opposite direction. Climb done, all down hill, just the tricky crag to negotiate near Hag Dyke. First race of the year finished, good prep for the upcoming fell relays.
1st Sam Bentham, Ilkley Harriers, 33:00
15th Helen Smith, 39:55
Myself 27th 45:50, former Otley member and fell running partner in crime Dale Foster 33rd 47:45

It is a shame that this year the classic fell Race the Great Whernside was clashing with the local race the Rombalds Romp in Ilkley . Senior member and club veteran Andrew Robertshow had a splendid performance in this AS 4 miler , Andrew crossed the finish line with a powerful 45.50 .
