Wharfedale Three Peaks, Saturday 29th June

Race report Matt Podd

This low-key race is organised by the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue, and there are two shorter options, However I opted for the full monty. I had done it before on a very hot day five years ago, recently it has been shortened from 22 to 17 miles, as the marshals were having too long a day out. We missed going along the ridge to Yockenthwaite and the lovely path at the head of the valley to Cray, but the hills remained the same. Nice cool day, with cloud on the tops, but surprisingly dry underfoot.

Had to get up early for the 8.00am start, but it meant I was home by 1.30. Off we set from Kettlewell and a big climb up onto the ridge and along to Birks Fell – I love the run along this ridge. Down to Buckden and the stiff climb up to the Pike. There has been a lot of recent work to improve this path. Long run over to Tor Mere Top and down to Tor Dyke all in clag, passing the Polish plane crash memorial on the way. Over the road at Hunters Sleets and the pull up Great Whernside. I had a bad attack of cramp on the climb but managed to get through it. All that’s left is the lovely run down to Kettlewell passing Hag Dyke scout hut and back to the finish at the cricket field.

A lovely morning out with great moorland birds and flowers, I felt quite strong. Pies and a medal awaited us. Congratulations to Oli Murphy of Ilkley Harriers who completed the route in a new record time of 2.09.36. I was the only Otley runner.

  1. Oli Murphy 2.09.36

13. Joynal Miah 3.03

37. Matt Podd 4.01

124 runners and walkers took part.
