Saturday 11th May – Pendle Cloughs Fell Race

Pendle Cloughs is an AL fell race that starts from Downham, on the other side of Pendle from Barley, where most races on the hill starts. It’s 22.5km long with 1200m of ascent, depending on route choice, and this year it was an English Champs race, to make it an especially tough field.

The race does exactly as the description says, taking you up all the Cloughs on pendle – Ogden, Boar and Ashendean, and packs in plenty of climbing, like it’s larger cousin – the Tour of Pendle. The day was pretty warm, with beautiful weather, and it’s a nice change to run on Pendle, when it’s not autumn clag.

I had a good run, despite the weather, only suffering a bit with knee niggles on the descent, with only minor drop off when I forgot to eat on the last climb. I also took a bit of a gamble on a low line between checkpoint 5 and 6, and while it didn’t hamper me too much, there was a bit too much stopping and checking, and I ended up taking a safer non-optimal line back to the main race route, one to recce properly next year, as I decided to do it on a whim in the car, and hadn’t recced any of the route, except for previous knowledge.

There were no other Otley runners in the race, with Leeds marathon being the big draw of the weekend.

The winner was Ben Rothery (Ilkley Harriers) in 01:58:48, first woman was Nichola Jackson (Keswick AC) in 02:20:51. I came in 111th in 02:47:43, missing out on a £100 voucher by a mere 11 places.

  1. A super report from Pendle by Tom L. who also cracked a brutal fell race like the Pendle Cloughs , he crossed the finish line with a powerful time of 2.47 and leaving behind him loads of good fell runners . Well done Tom !
