Report from Paul Tranter
This is the second time that Pamela and I have run the Warwick Half Marathon. We both
did it last year and both recalled really enjoying the race, so we entered again. Turns out it’s really hard!
The race is well organised and starts and finished at Warwick race course. A bit of pre
race planning last year and we we back in the same car parking spot just 10 minutes from
the start line. Warwick also has public toilets that are open on a Sunday morning, are clean
and have no queues. Perfect. All pre race needs met.
It was another bright day, though not quite as sunny as last year. Overnight rain meant the
roads were wet and, in places, muddy underfoot, but a very pleasant 10 degrees.
The race route goes up through the centre of Warwick, then heads out into the rolling
Warwick countryside towards Beausale. It is an undulating course (think Yorkshire flat), but
the stinger is the constant surprise uphill ramps in the second half of the race, just when
tired legs don’t need them.
Still, we both ran only a few minutes slower than last year and that was after a far too
speedy Market Bosworth Country Park parkrun the day before (great course!) where
Pamela scored another age category win.
Definitely a race worth doing if you want a reasonably speedy, traffic free road half
marathon. Also helps if you mum lives in Coventry just 20 minutes drive from the start.
