Report from Matt Podd
This 7.4Km race is held as part of the excellent Weeton Show. I’d never done the race or visited the show before, so this was the year. It happened during a weekend of Fishwicking on my part. I had run 3 timed runs in two days, Skipton Parkrun, The Leeds Donor Run last night and then this.
Luckily the early rain stopped leaving warm muggy conditions. After watching the thrilling terrier racing and other attractions about 45 (including 4 OAC running gods) of us gathered in the show ring. After a lap of the ring (to entertain the crowd) we set off racing through the village, down Gallogate and through Rougemont woods with a sharp left turn to ascend to the mast on Healthwaite Hill. The turn in the woods was missed by a group of three runners including Dave Tait and Howard Jeffries who went on a lengthy diversion. Once at the mast we turned round and retraced our route back to the show field, arriving very sweaty and hot to tremendous applause.
We were rewarded with a beer token (which soon got redeemed) and a lovely medal that I gave to a young kid. A good race on a mixture of tarmac and trail and a great show to enjoy as well.
Fishwicking: to run many races in quick succession. Named after the legendary Fell Runner Darren Fishwick.
