Saturday 18th June 2022 – Buckden Pike Fell Race

Distance 3.7 miles Elevation 1594ft

After being well rested from Beamsley and Harrogate League and too tight to lose my entry fee I dragged my tired legs to Buckden to pit myself against the elite, this race was a British and English championship fell race and also a Yorkshire championship race, so what the hell was I thinking!!! Luckily their were a couple other Otley AC members daft enough to try. When I arrived the lady’s race had just finished, this was also a championship race, the results where:
English champs

1st Hannah Russell 37.11 Helm hill runners

2nd Nicola Jackson 37.39 Keswick AC

3rd Sara Willholt 38.08 Mercia fell runners
Yorkshire champs

4th Sharon Taylor 38.44 helm hill

5th Emma Hopkinson 39.20 Wharfedale harriers

9th Rose Mather 41.42 York knavesmire harriers
No Female representatives from Otley AC. but a well done to Tanya Shepard finishing 63rd in a time of 52.16 from Horsforth Fellanddale ( second claim Otley )

After a go on splat a rat and hook a duck it was race time. An excited field was ordered to move back down the road and get ready for the off. Once the whistle blew it was flat out off the road, through the car park, on to the fells and over the stream, pushing and shoving only to be met by the first scramble. This is straight up and up, only giving brief relief to the steepness of the climb. As you grunt and grind your way to the top you look around to see men of all ages battling it out, it amazes me again that 60 year olds are beating me up a hill, this just shows you can be fit at any age. Once the race neared the top it levels off briefly before descending a few 100 feet before turning left to traverse the fell back across to the brutal decent we had to climb on our hands and knees to the finish, oh and hurdle a wall onto the road and across into the show ground. Just to add the experts somehow manage to run down this at less that 5 minute miles, this must be spectacular to watch and comes with an element of danger, as the bloodied and battered body’s of a few runners at the end showed. Big well done to every 1 who took part and also Tom Lynch for dusting off the wallet and getting the beers in. Did anyone know if I won on the raffle? Ticket 258!

  1. I agree that second claim Tanya Shepard had a brilliant fell race crossing the finish line in a solid 52.16 . Fell runner Tom L. also had a splendid performance finishing in a powerful 42.41 . Club President Graham L. too had a super run on this tough 4 miles finishing in a fast 43.59 . The report from Buckden Pike by Oliver R. is quite good , Oliver had as well a great run in this championships finishing in a superb 45.29 .
