20k FRA English Championships, AM standard with over 1000m of climbing

Race Report from Oliver Richards

On the morning of the race While eating my full english at faulty towers hotel in shap, I was rudely interrupted by Matt Clegg, lost as usual! We finally got in convoy from Tebay services, Matt double dropping a few more gels for his breakfast. The organiser were correct in saying you needed an off road vehicle for this one! It was miles up a single jagged path. We all gathered at the start for the briefing, 1 guy turning up that late, he had to be chauffeur driven to the start line. The Race was the first of its kind to take in the entire Skyline, and a magnificent skyline it was on the edge of the Lake District. The race started in the valley below the howgills at Borrowdale farm and started with a good climb up to the ridge. Graham was quickly into his stride, myself opting to run with Matt after I had a late night out playing on the fells the night before with Stephen Boddy. The race headed westerly towards the A6 before descending to borrow beck for a boot wash before a steep short cut ( not so short) up the other side back onto the skyline where the terrain changed to forests and rocky outcrops. After another summit to Whinfell trig point you descend towards the M6, where you are met by the final beast of a climb, it reminded us of the scramble up the side of whernside! Following a quad track and bridle way across to the last descent I picked up a bit of speed to finish strongly only to be met by a queue for stew 100 deep, so it was off to the pub for a pint, a coffee and a few more gels for matt 😂Well done to Sara for winning the lady’s 10k, next time you will have to do the grown up 1 😂This was a really enjoyable race and 1 I would recommend to people for next year.

The race was won by Brennan Townshend, Keswick AC in 1.37.48

First lady was Sarah McCormack, Ambleside in 1.54.05 (1sec ahead of 2nd place!)

For Otley:

Graham Lake 181st 2.24.48

Oliver Richards 225th 2.37.10

Matt Clegg 275th 2.53.28

Antonio Cardinale 317th 6.30.49

In the 10k race Sara enjoyed a shorter, but still steep route over the eastern end of the skyline, finishing 1st lady thanks to some good nav (i.e. finding the last checkpoint!)

Sara Elliott finished 1st lady in 1.16.38

1st man was Rhys Findlay-Robinson, Dark Peak in 52.05

  1. Fantastic performance from Otley AC President Graham L. in this Borrowdale Fell Race , Graham crossed the finish line in a superb 2.24 . Oliver R. too had a great run in this 20k race , he finished in a super time of 2.37. Matt C. also had a powerful run finishing in a very strong time of 2.53 . Excellent run from Sara E. in this Skyline Race finishing in super fast 1.16 . Sadly I got lost few times and I went astray climbing mountains that I should not have done . I crossed the finish line exhausted .
