Sunday 24th April – Blakey Blitz Fell Race
Report from Matt Podd
10.6 Miles with 2805ft of climbing making this an AM Fell Race.
Colin Best and I had last done this race in 2019. He suggested a return trip when we met last weekend at the Guiseley Gallop.
Set off early on Sunday morning to drive to the Lion Inn on top of the North York Moors. A cool breezy day, good for running but a bit chilly for the marshals. Very dry conditions underfoot, with only one muddy descent.
An interesting race that starts with a long descent into the Rosedale Valley then climbs up onto the moor for a long fairly level run over the top. A slippery descent into Fryup Dale and run up it to a stiff climb back onto the moor. The route is then retraced with a diversion to visit a lonely trig point. This means that there is a mile of ascent to the finish!
1 Lee Kemp, Esk Valley Fell, 82.33
9 Catherine Williamson, Loftus and Whitby, 89.25 New course record
92 Matt Podd, Otley AC 135.56
97 Colin Best, Otley AC 140.39
103 ran. The older we get – the faster we used to be!

Didn’t see him to far ahead but Dale Foster ran finished 63rd 114.57
I planned to do this Blakey Blitz fell race , but the day before I did the Anniversary Waltz Fell Race and on Sunday morning I was struggling to walk . Matt P. had a great morning on the Yorkshire Dales , he crossed the finish line in a fantastic time of 135.56 considering that it was a very hard one , an AM fell race. Senior member and fell runner Colin B. too had a splendid run, he finished in a fast 140.39 . Well done both .
