Sunday 20th March – Ian Roberts Memorial Fell Race

Report from Colin Best

Ian Roberts Memorial Fell Race10.3k 260m BM

I last did this race in 2009 and vowed then never again as I described it as a tussock too far. However time mellows so decided to give it go again. With Antonio the only other Otley AC participant we set off in bright sunshine but a very chilly wind. The start was a good climb above the cricket club so I was consoling myself with the notion it was a net downhill race. After an easy half mile it was out on to that tussocks moorland. Fortunately over the years since my last outing here there was a path and although rough was a lot easier that I remembered. After a steep climb up Pule hill I did manage to pass a few fellow back markers. Alas the last mile or so was just as I remembered massive tussocks a steep muddy decent then a short steep climb to the finish. The best bit was definitely the spread put on at end with plenty left for us backmarkers.

  1. I agree with Colin that the tussocks were hundreds and gigantic the last mile was indeed full of hazards of every kind and I was worried for my ankles . Colin B. had a fantastic fell race crossing the finish line in a fast time 84.45 .
