Saturday 20 November 2021 – Tour of Pendle

Report from John Armitstead

Well considering that entry fee for this race was payable by quaint old-fashioned cheque it was no surprise that the results took quite a few days to appear online. Having said that it was the quaint old-fashioned price of only £9 so can’t complain. It was a cold and breezy Saturday morning but visibility was good which is always helpful on the featureless top of Pendle Hill. Masks required for picking race numbers up and then 360 runners gathered together in very close order while the start was delayed ten minutes, due I think to parking problems slowing things down. After a flattish first half mile the first of 5 ascents of Pendle was undertaken on this 17mile 4500ft course. Its always surprising just how quickly the faster runners disappear into the far distance after no time at all! Time just to get your head down and get on with it knowing that some suffering lies ahead. The climbs are a real slog and the descents are just too steep to go flat out. It was good to see Matt Podd out marshalling at the foot of the final climb and providing chocolate biscuits and jelly babies, thanks Matt!
Good efforts by all 8 Otley runners and especially to Chris Brunold who had been disappointed to miss the 3 Peaks cut off and made up for it this time.

  1. Sometimes in the past I ran the Half tour of Pendle that is around 10 miles and I know well that the full tour is really tough going . Merit to Chris B. that had a fantastic performance in this hard 17 miler crossing the finish line in a brilliant 5.12 . Also our President Graham L. had a great day on the Pendle hill finishing in a solid 3.23 . Veteran of fell running scene John A. had a splendid fell race finishing with a significant 3.17 . Well done everybody .
