Sunday 7th November – SYRY Gunpowder Plot 10K

Race report from Andy McDonnell:
Winner Chris Ovenden 35:09
1st woman Abigail Branston 43:41
10th Me in 43:51
On Sunday it was See York Run York’s , 10k gunpowder plot race. They’re a small family run company and runners themselves with hundreds of marathons run. They hold very friendly inclusive races around York and offer great medals and cake!!
Sundays race was started by non other than Guy Fawkes (courtesy of York Dungeon) who merrily wished us a faster run than he did!
There were 174 runners including a visually impaired runner and her guide. The route is a mixture of grass and track , you start on the field next to the racecourse, before hitting the service track around the race course and then little Knavesmire before returning back to the start for lap 2.
I set off just behind the fast club runners and as is my way set off far too fast and then have to hold on for the remaining 9.5km.. I’ve mainly been doing ultras this year, so attempting speed is a difficult mindset to get into, especially when your legs grumble at the transitions from track to heavy grass. However I managed to steady rhythm, even having the energy to smile at the dog walkers as they meandered along and managed to churn out a decent time, on the slightly longer than advertised route, getting over the finish line and going straight for some delightful carrot cake !
Ps I even had bare legs and only 2 layers and no gloves!!
A great fun event blessed by good weather, I’d highly recommend checking out their future events. I’ve an eye on their 2hr bloodaxe challenge in February.

  1. Well done to Andy Mc. for completing this 10k in York , Andy crossed the finish line in a quite fast 43.51 , considering that the the course is a bit longer than 10k , it is not a bad time to do at all .
